How to Find a Therapist in the New Year

Hey! Happy New Year!

I don’t know if you made New Year’s resolutions this year, or not. I feel like that practice may be dwindling a bit as people just, well, try to survive the craziness that was 2019 and prepare for 2020.

But whether you’re planning to thrive in 2020 or just hoping to survive, you may be thinking that this is the right time to find yourself a therapist. And let me tell you that if you are thinking that this is the time, then this is the time. Trust me, waiting only makes the process harder down the line.

I get asked a lot about how to find a good therapist. My clients’ friends inquire, I get emails from my own friends and family, and plenty of questions from prospective clients when I have to turn people away from my practice in Portland.

Finding a therapist can be a surprisingly difficult process, so I went ahead and wrote an article about it last year with all the advice that I could think of to make this search less painful and confusing. I tried to capture all the details, from literally finding a person, to vetting them, to preparing for the first appointment.

If you’re on the search, I hope it helps. Here’s all my advice on how to find your therapist. Yours. The one who you will want to brag to your friends about because, well, you finally found the person you were looking for to help you on your journey.
